Heraklion is an exciting city known for its energy, its people and its history. This history gives the city a heritage that few small cities in the world can approach. However, today, Heraklion is a town in the midst of yet more cultural change, growing in its sense of itself in the modern European context.
Heraklion today; proud of its pivotal role as the epicenter of three continents, a city for the new century, has the desire, talent and energy to further develop its economic prosperity and culture.
A wealth of cultural events are organized every year, spaces have been allocated to young artists to exhibit their work and seminars, lectures and art workshops are on the increase offering to citizens and visitors alike authentic cultural experiences.
The Heraklion Summer Festival is a long-standing cultural institution of unfailing impact. Once again, the programme for 2019 features major events in various forms of the arts (theatre, the spoken word, music, dance and cinema).
In aiming to showcase local artistic potential, creativity and the capabilities of people keen to express themselves and share facets of their talent, this year an effort has once again been made to give local culture groups a platform for expression. Admission to fifty performances will be free of charge, with voluntary contributions of food for needy groups in society.
Together with the theme-based festivals Art en Route and Crete: One History, Five Plus One Cultures (which have been organized ever since this administration took over, featuring activities specially prepared
for presentation in the city), we trust that the performances in the 2019 Heraklion Summer Arts Festival will be truly entertaining cultural events for residents and visitors alike.
